https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/01/02/can-the-last-of-us-break-the-curse-of-bad-video-game-adaptations

Un article interessant sur la genese de la serie. Au debut ca avait ete confie a screen gems responsable entre autre des bouses intergalactique Resident Evil et ca devait etre un film.

Citation :
But his evangelism had nearly gone awry. In 2014, a film version of The Last of Us was optioned by Screen Gems, a Sony subsidiary that he described, diplomatically, as geared toward making “a particular kind of movie.” Screen Gems is best known for another video-game adaptation, the commercially successful but critically reviled “Resident Evil” franchise; the most indelible image from the first installment is that of Milla Jovovich, clad in a red dress and knee-high boots, sailing through the air to kick an undead dog in the face. Druckmann respected Sam Raimi, who had been hired to direct “The Last of Us,” but he mistrusted the executives involved, who constantly asked for things to be bigger and “sexier.” His aesthetic touchstone was “No Country for Old Men”; they wanted “World War Z.”

Citation :
HBO’s The Last of Us is by far the best video game adaptation ever made for the big or small screen.

That’s the blurb HBO wants for this post-apocalyptic tale of desperation, perseverance and zombies, and that’s the blurb HBO is sure to get — because it’s almost incontestably true. At the same time, it undersells just how very good The Last of Us is, simply as a TV show — albeit one existing fans will recognize as closely, at times shot-for-shot and line-for-line, linked to its Naughty Dog source material.

Bella Ramsey fait du bon boulot.

IGN
Citation :
Ellie, who could easily have been reduced to a plot device, is the charismatic heartbeat of the show, simultaneously reminding Joel of what he's lost, and filling him with a sense of purpose not felt since his darkest day. Love lost is a throughline of the series, but more critical to The Last of Us is the pseudo-paternal love found between the two. Bella Ramsey is simply electrifying as Ellie, effortlessly shifting between delicate vulnerability, youthful excitement, and determined power. She's a true revelation and deserves all the credit in the world for making her mark on a character whose previous interpretation has been so firmly ingrained in people's minds. She's dynamite from the offset, but Ramsey goes from strength to strength in step with Joel and Ellie's relationship as the season progresses.

Gizmodo:
Citation :
And yet, while Pascal is great, Ramsey is the true revelation. Most of us know Ramsey (who uses they/them pronouns) from their brief, powerhouse performance as Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones. Well, take that level of confidence, charisma, and Westeros ferocity, and project it onto an angsty American teenager. Ramsey is brilliant as Ellie. The character is whip-smart, hilariously funny, and says whatever is on her mind. You may even, at times, hate Ellie because of how defiant and annoying she can be. But Ramsey's handle on that is what grounds, and ultimately endears, the character. Their ability to turn this seemingly aloof, quirky girl into an old soul is remarkable and, much like Pascal as Joel, the performance only gets better as the series moves on.

WaPo
Citation :
When the show lurches toward its most pivotal scenes, Pascal and Ramsay are at their best. The heartbreaking first 15 minutes of the game are depicted here, and Pascal's performance underscores the blooming heartache that would fester into a shriveled, diminished soul. I knew what was going to happen, it happened, yet I still felt compelled to shed a tear. And Ramsay's "Game of Thrones" experience was great practice for portraying Ellie as a young girl born into a world that doesn't nurture innocence. Ellie's reluctant guardian is a broken man — and an ill portent for her future.

independent.co.uk
Citation :
The casting of The Last of Us's central pairing, both alumni of the big dragon and ice-zombie show, is no coincidence. Pascal has forged an astonishing TV career from his fan-favourite, but only eight episode-long, arc on Game of Thrones. After Narcos and The Mandalorian, this is Pascal's third post-Westeros leading role. He has a reliable magnetism as grizzled men who'd rather punch than talk. Ramsey, meanwhile, does an excellent line in precocious but endearing teenagers. "You ask a lot of goddam questions," Joel growls at her, as she prattles her way through the lonely coniferous wasteland.

Engadget
Citation :
Meanwhile, Ramsey charms from their first moment onscreen as Ellie. We're afforded a little more of Ellie's backstory in the first episode, and it's a great introduction to the character that immediately shows her brazen attitude toward anything that gets in her way. Much of the humor and levity comes from Ellie, and Ramsey's performance captures the innocent resilience that only a 14-year-old could have in the face of abject horror and seemingly inescapable doom. The weight on Ellie's shoulders grows throughout the series, and Ramsey is always up to the task of taking Ellie to the brink of breakdown before she comes back to the sense of duty she feels to care for the people she's chosen to let into her life. Ellie's naivety and sense of wonder gets bruised time and time again throughout the series, but both Ramsey and the scripts never let her lose it entirely.

While both Pascal and Ramsey deliver excellent performances in their own right, the magic really happens when the two are playing off each other. Naturally, the characters start out skeptical of one another, with Joel straight-up calling Ellie "cargo" to her face. But Ellie's fascination with seeing the world beyond the quarantine zone she's been stuck in slowly breaks Joel down. Pascal does a great job flipping between those two sides of the character, offering up hints of compassion and concern for Ellie as a person, only to retreat into an emotionally distant protector role.

Vanity Fair
Citation :
Maybe the original performances will be missed, though it's hard to argue with Pascal and Ramsey's work. They build a tight, credibly connected rapport, convincingly playing two people hardened by circumstances in very different ways, at very different points in their lives. The tortured dad-daughter cliché of their bond is more glaring in series form, though the actors find deft ways around the script's most obvious thunks of trope-y melodrama. The game's Ellie, Ashley Johnson, gets to make a brief appearance on the show, while the icy and formidable Merle Dandridge reprises her original role. The series is peppered with good performances (if all too brief in many cases), populating this woeful world with weary life.

THR
Citation :
The second episode, with Druckmann taking the directing reins, shifts the series into gear with the introduction of the Ellie/Joel relationship that isn't just the series' heart; it's the series. The gruff, reluctant protector and spunky last-hope-for-humanity child dynamic is every bit as familiar as anything in the pilot, but it's rarely been captured as lovingly and lovably as it is by Pascal — able to show his face for this version of Mando and Baby Yoda — and especially Ramsey, who audiences will remember as Lyanna Mormont, saving grace of later Game of Thrones seasons. Pascal expertly embodies the exasperation and growing affection that Joel feels, but it's Ramsey who overcomes a consistently inconsistent American accent and instantly makes Ellie wise-but-not-too-wise, fearless-but-not-too-fearless, funny-but-not-annoyingly-funny. Joel and players of the game make the commitment to die for her and viewers may be willing, from the stakes-free comfort of a couch, to do the same.

Polygon
Citation :
This familiar dynamic forms the spine of The Last of Us, in which a grumpy older man must protect a plucky young girl, and their relationship over time turns from resentful to appreciative. As shopworn as this sort of pairing is (doubly so for fans of the game), Pascal and Ramsey are tremendously good on screen together. Pascal's Joel is more haunted than gruff, and Ramsey brings a meaner edge to Ellie that does a lot to transcend what began in the video game as a conduit for paternal feelings.

Geeks of Color
Citation :
Another victory for the series is the existence of Bella Ramsey. When she burst on the scene as the smallest badass of Bear Island in Game of Thrones, it was a joy to cheer her on. In HBO's The Last of Us, she has been fully unleashed. The wit, the charm, the curiosity, loss, love, and fun. Bella brings both much-needed levity and gravity to each line delivery. There are heavy moments ahead and likely some tears (they got me a few times), but Ramsey delivers one hell of a performance within that darkness. She will draw you in; she fills every frame and appears as a giant in many scenes. If you're going to love this show, Ramsey and Pascal will be a big part of the reason why.

PressStart AU
Citation :
Pascal and Ramsey have somehow made these characters their own, whilst retaining key mannerisms that made these characters so great to begin with. It's hard to talk about their journey without revealing anything too important, but even though I knew exactly how the key plot points would play out, I still felt absolutely every struggle and triumph that this duo went through. I genuinely cared for them, and believed their absolute necessity to make it to their end goal, which is what a story like The Last Of Us calls for, and these performances deliver it in spades.
